Our Story
The founding of IlluMine Research began with a very frustrating set of questions. Questions that could not be, but often were, 'answered' with canned and relatively uninformative data summaries. Visually appealing reports and dashboards in lieu of rigorous evidence-based quantitative and qualitative practices. Overly assertive guesses and inconsistent interpretations of visualizations. Ultimately these replaced the sense of humility required to understand that 'truths' in the clinical setting, the operations setting, or the population health management setting are rarely simple. And that recognition of not knowing is the first most important step in creating positive changes at any level.
It is not unusual for intuition to supercede evidence in healthcare. In fact it's commonplace. It's not that intuition is bad. It's actually important! But alone it is often poorly informed. And when poorly informed intuition is used to make decisions, the results can present very costly burdens of risk both to patients and institutions.
As in patient health, prevention is a far better solution. And there are SO MANY problems that can be prevented, increasing the quality of healthcare in your organization. But the classic exercise of looking for 'root cause' post-mortem won't fix the problems you face now. All you can do is find out how something failed. Note that the vast majority of operational problems are rarely, if at all, the result of a single event. Comparable to patient medical problems, they each have time-bound histories, multiple contributing factors, and sometime multiple effects. What they need is a voice, to first be understood, then to be solved.
With this in mind, we began in 2015 by addressing a problem with summary data reports, which can be non-informative, cherry picked, or simply misleading. We started by creating custom applications that employed statistical and machine learning methods to inform and become embedded as a partner within the decisioning process:
- Apps that help answer whether or not a KPI is even, well, a KPI (many if not most are very loosely constructed, and never truly tested).
- Apps that explain, among possible contributing factors to a problem, which are the most likely alone or in combination, to produce one or more outcomes.
- Apps that simulate and answer 'what if' scenarios, giving one a sense for how different inputs to a problem may affect outomes.
- Apps that predict, answering 'what will happen next?', and prescribe: 'what should we do now?'.
If these questions are important to you, you'll bet they are important to us. And with the additional tools of AI, we have created a new generation of applications that can deliver value to you, even better. This is what we live and breathe. Patient, operational, and population health are our key foci. We want to partner with you to make your vision in healthcare a reality. We know it drives you if you're reading this - so let's take that journey together.
Our Mission
"To transform healthcare delivery through evidence-based analytics and AI that enhance, rather than replace, human expertise. We develop transparent, explainable solutions that bridge the gap between data science and clinical practice, helping healthcare providers optimize patient outcomes and operational efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of scientific rigor and practical utility."
Our Team Leads (other bios of all staff coming soon!)
We are a team of healthcare professionals and data scientists who are passionate about using the tools of data science and AI to improve healthcare delivery. Our culture is one of collaboration, transparency, and innovation. We aren't a large company, but we are very tight knit. All of us have a passion for our work, and everyone has a voice in the decisions we make, a strong touch in the work we do and the products we create. There is a strong sense of ownership and accountability for the work we do. We all loathe corporate finger pointing, instead opting for a culture of learning and improvement. Collectively, this makes the whole far better and more efficient than the sum of the fantastic members of our team. It is what has made IlluMine Research, and the lives of the people we serve, a success.
Our Core Values
Integrity
We place ownership, soundness, transparency, security, and compliance as our 5 pillars of integrity. We value humility and if we don't know something, we say so and find out. If we make a mistake, we own it and make it right. We value our clients and doing otherwise is simply a waste of their valuable time and resources.
Innovation
Pushing the boundaries of what's possible is what makes winning teams win. And we have a process that allows us to build a product funnel from what we've learned in custom projects for what we can do next. Here, experience is both our best teacher and differentiator.
Collaboration
Internally, we work as a well-trained unit, from concept to deployment, each working off of each others strengths and being malleable to the needs of each and every project. Externally, we work tightly with our clients, to ensure that we are always aligned with their needs and desired outcomes. The digital healthcare space is always changing, and we are always learning.
